Short answer: A resting ECG (electrocardiogram) is a
quick, painless test that records your heart’s electrical activity, and
you can get one in Bali at almost any international-standard hospital or
expat clinic — usually the same day, often within the hour. A standalone
resting ECG typically costs IDR 150,000–450,000 (USD
9–28); it’s also included in most full check-up packages at no
extra charge. For anything beyond a basic reading — chest pain,
palpitations, or a fitness-to-exercise question — choose a facility with
a cardiologist and the option of an exercise (stress) ECG or
echocardiogram. This guide shows you where to go, what each heart test
does, and how to pick the right venue.

What an ECG is (and what it
isn’t)
An ECG places small sticky electrodes on your chest, arms and legs to
record the electrical signals that make your heart beat. It takes a few
minutes, is completely painless, and produces a trace a doctor reads for
rhythm problems, signs of past or current strain, and other clues.
Two things to keep in mind:
- A resting ECG is a snapshot. It captures your heart
in the seconds it’s recording. Intermittent problems (occasional
palpitations) may not appear on a resting trace — which is why doctors
sometimes add a Holter monitor (24-hour recording) or a stress ECG. - A normal ECG is reassuring but not a guarantee.
It’s one piece of a heart assessment, alongside blood pressure,
cholesterol, symptoms and history.

For a simple resting ECG as part of a routine check-up, an expat
clinic near you is fast and inexpensive. For symptom-driven testing —
chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations — go straight to a hospital
with a cardiology department where a specialist can order and interpret
the right combination of tests on the same visit.
Where to go, by need
Routine screening (no
symptoms)
If you just want an ECG as part of a general check-up, most
international-facing clinics in Kuta, Sanur, Canggu, Ubud and Nusa Dua
include it in their packages or offer it standalone. Browse options by
area in our clinics and
hospitals directory.
Symptoms or a known heart
condition
Chest pain, unusual breathlessness, fainting, or a racing/irregular
heartbeat are reasons to choose an international-standard hospital with
a cardiologist — not a walk-in clinic. There, a doctor can combine a
resting ECG with an echocardiogram or stress test and act immediately if
needed.
Fitness clearance (sport,
diving, work)
If you need heart clearance for scuba diving, a physically demanding
job, or a return to intense exercise, a hospital that offers a stress
ECG is the better choice, because it shows how your heart behaves under
load.

clinical matters that must be handled by a licensed physician.
If you are having chest pain, severe breathlessness, or think
you may be having a heart attack, do not book a routine appointment —
seek emergency care immediately (in Indonesia, call 112).

How to choose the
right heart-check venue
When comparing clinics for a heart check, weigh four things:
- Is there a cardiologist on site? Essential for
anything beyond a routine resting ECG. - Which tests can they do in one visit? Resting ECG
only, or also echo/stress/Holter? - English-language reporting. You want your trace
explained clearly and a report you can take home. - Accreditation. International accreditation signals
consistent quality and equipment standards — see our accreditation and trust guide.
Why heart screening
is worth doing in Bali
Cardiovascular disease remains the world’s leading cause of death,
and the World Health Organization highlights that many cardiac events
are preventable through early detection and management of risk factors
like high blood pressure and cholesterol (World Health Organization,
Cardiovascular diseases, who.int). A simple ECG combined with a
blood-pressure and lipid check during your Bali visit is a low-cost way
to catch issues early — especially valuable if you haven’t had a heart
check in years.
Frequently asked questions
Does an ECG hurt? No. The electrodes are sticky pads
placed on the skin; they only read your heart’s signals and deliver
nothing. The test is completely painless and takes a few minutes.
Can I get an ECG without an appointment? At many
expat clinics, yes — a resting ECG is often a walk-in service. Hospitals
may prefer a booking, especially for cardiology consultations. Our
concierge can confirm which nearby facility takes walk-ins today.
Is a normal ECG a clean bill of health for my heart?
Not entirely. A resting ECG is reassuring but only captures a moment in
time and doesn’t assess everything. Blood pressure, cholesterol, blood
sugar and symptoms all form part of a proper heart-risk picture, which
is why a cardiac screening package
bundles them together.
Do I need to prepare? For a resting ECG, no fasting
is required. Avoid heavy exercise and caffeine right before if possible,
and wear a top that’s easy to remove. For a stress ECG, wear comfortable
clothes and shoes you can walk or jog in.
Will I get a copy of my trace? A reputable clinic
will give you a printed or digital ECG report you can take to your
doctor at home — always ask for it.
