Short answer: Thyroid testing in Bali is a simple
blood test, most often starting with TSH
(thyroid-stimulating hormone) and, if needed, free T4 and free
T3. It’s widely available at clinics, labs and hospitals —
usually same-day results — and costs roughly IDR 150,000–350,000
(USD 9–22) for a TSH alone, or IDR 400,000–900,000 (USD
25–56) for a fuller thyroid panel. No fasting is required. A
thyroid check is worth adding if you have unexplained fatigue, weight
changes, hair or skin changes, feeling unusually hot or cold, mood

What a thyroid test measures
Your thyroid is a small gland in your neck that regulates metabolism.
Testing checks whether it’s underactive (hypothyroid), overactive
(hyperthyroid), or normal:
- TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone): the usual
first-line test. Counter-intuitively, a high TSH often points
to an underactive thyroid, and a low TSH to an
overactive one. - Free T4 (thyroxine): the main hormone the thyroid
makes; helps confirm and characterise a problem. - Free T3 (triiodothyronine): the active hormone;
added in specific situations. - Thyroid antibodies: ordered when an autoimmune
thyroid condition is suspected.
Most people only need a TSH to start; the fuller panel is added if

If you just want a TSH, a walk-in lab is fast and cheap. If your
symptoms are significant or a previous result was abnormal, choose a
clinic or hospital where a doctor — ideally with access to endocrinology

Do you need to fast? No
A thyroid test does not require fasting. That said,
if you’re getting it as part of a check-up package that also includes
cholesterol and blood sugar, follow the fasting instructions for the
whole panel. If you already take thyroid medication, ask the clinic
about timing your dose around the blood draw.
Symptoms that warrant a
thyroid check
Thyroid problems are common and easily missed because the symptoms
are vague and overlap with everyday tiredness. Consider testing if you
have:
- Persistent fatigue not explained by sleep or
lifestyle. - Unexplained weight gain or loss.
- Feeling cold (possible underactive) or
unusually hot / sweaty (possible overactive). - Hair thinning, dry skin, brittle nails.
- Mood changes — low mood, anxiety, or
restlessness. - A racing heartbeat or tremor.
- Menstrual-cycle changes — thyroid issues can
disrupt cycles, which is why a thyroid test often appears alongside a hormone work-up.
Thyroid disorders are notably more common in women, so a TSH is a
sensible addition to a women’s health screen.
Interpreting a thyroid
result
A borderline TSH with no symptoms is common and often just needs a
repeat test rather than treatment. A clearly abnormal TSH, or an
abnormal TSH with symptoms, warrants a doctor’s assessment and usually a

Why thyroid screening is
worthwhile
Thyroid disorders are among the more common endocrine conditions, and
they’re very treatable once identified. The World Health Organization
notes that iodine status and thyroid function are important
public-health markers, and that undiagnosed thyroid dysfunction can

Frequently asked questions
How long do thyroid test results take in Bali? A TSH
is usually same day at a walk-in lab, often within a couple of hours. A
fuller panel (T4, T3, antibodies) may take until the next day, and some
assays are sent out, adding time — ask when you book.
Do I need a referral for a thyroid test? No. You can
self-refer for a TSH or thyroid panel at labs and clinics across Bali. A
referral only matters for insurance reimbursement or if you go on to see
an endocrinologist.
Is one TSH enough? For screening, a TSH is the
sensible first step. If it’s abnormal — or your symptoms are strong
despite a borderline TSH — a doctor will add free T4 (and sometimes T3
or antibodies) to pin down the cause. Don’t over-order at the start.
Does the time of day matter? TSH varies mildly
through the day and this rarely changes management for screening. If you
take thyroid medication, ask the clinic how to time your dose around the
blood draw, as that can affect the reading.
Can thyroid problems affect my periods or fertility?
Yes. Thyroid dysfunction can disrupt menstrual cycles and is worth
checking as part of a work-up for irregular periods, unexplained
fatigue, or fertility concerns — which is why a TSH often sits alongside
