Liver Function Test in Bali: Clinics and What It Covers (2027)

Short answer: A liver function test (LFT) in Bali is
a simple blood test that measures enzymes and proteins reflecting how
your liver is working — ALT, AST, GGT, ALP, bilirubin, and albumin. It’s
available at virtually every clinic and pathology lab, usually the same
day, and a standalone LFT panel typically costs IDR
150,000–500,000 (USD 9–31)
; it’s also bundled into most full
check-up packages. Mildly raised enzymes are common and often harmless —
alcohol, some medications, fatty liver, or a recent viral illness can
all nudge them up — but persistent or marked elevations should be
reviewed by a doctor. This guide explains what the panel covers, where
to get one, and when a result matters.

What a liver function test
measures

Despite the name, an LFT doesn’t measure “function” directly so much
as look for signs of liver stress or damage. The main components:

  • ALT (alanine aminotransferase): an enzyme
concentrated in liver cells; raised levels suggest liver-cell irritation
    or damage.
  • AST (aspartate aminotransferase): similar to ALT
but also found in muscle, so it’s read alongside ALT.
  • GGT (gamma-glutamyl transferase): sensitive to
    alcohol and bile-duct issues.
  • ALP (alkaline phosphatase): relates to the bile
    ducts and, separately, bone.
  • Bilirubin: the pigment that causes jaundice when it
    builds up.
  • Albumin & total protein: proteins the liver
    makes; reflect longer-term liver health.

Where to get an LFT in Bali

Provider type Speed Indicative cost (IDR / USD) Best for
Pathology lab (walk-in) Same day, often <2 hrs 150k–350k / 9–22 A single LFT panel, lowest cost
Expat / boutique clinic Same day 250k–500k / 16–31 LFT plus a doctor to explain it
Int’l-standard hospital Same day 300k–600k / 19–38 LFT within a fuller work-up

Indicative ranges from publicly listed Bali provider rates,
reviewed quarterly. Confirm before visiting; benchmark against our price guide.

If you just want the numbers, a walk-in pathology lab is cheapest and
fastest. If you want the result interpreted — which is what actually
helps — choose a clinic or hospital where a doctor reviews it with you.

Do you need to fast?

A standalone LFT usually does not require fasting.
But LFTs are frequently ordered alongside cholesterol and blood-sugar
tests, and those do need an overnight fast — so if your LFT is
part of a package, follow the fasting instructions for the whole panel.
When in doubt, fast: it never harms the LFT and protects the accuracy of
the other tests.

Understanding a mildly
raised result

This is the section people actually need. A common scenario in Bali:
a traveller gets a check-up, sees “ALT high” flagged, and worries. In
practice, mild enzyme elevations frequently come from benign, reversible
causes:

  • Alcohol — even a few relaxed holiday nights can
    nudge GGT and enzymes up.
  • Medications and supplements — including some
    over-the-counter painkillers and herbal products.
  • Fatty liver — increasingly common and often
    diet-related.
  • A recent viral illness — a cold or stomach bug can
    transiently affect enzymes.
  • Dehydration — easy in Bali’s heat.

What a doctor weighs is the pattern and size: a
mild, isolated rise with no symptoms often just needs a repeat test in a
few weeks. A marked rise, a rise across several markers, jaundice, or
symptoms (pain, dark urine, fatigue) warrants proper investigation,
which may include a hepatitis screen or a liver ultrasound. For how to
interpret flags generally, see our guide to
reading your results
.

Medical disclaimer: This guide is for information
only and is not medical advice or a diagnosis. Liver test results must
be interpreted by a licensed physician in the context of your history,
medications, alcohol use and symptoms. Do not stop or change any
medication based on this article. If you have jaundice (yellowing of the
skin or eyes), severe abdominal pain, or persistent vomiting, seek
medical care promptly. MedicalCheckupBali is independent and does not
own or operate any clinic.

When to consider a
hepatitis screen too

If you’re concerned about your liver — especially with risk factors
or persistent enzyme elevation — a doctor may add hepatitis B and C
testing. Viral hepatitis is a major global cause of liver disease, and
the World Health Organization notes that many people carry chronic
hepatitis B or C without symptoms for years, which is why testing
matters for at-risk individuals (World Health Organization,
Hepatitis, who.int). A Bali clinic can arrange this alongside
your LFT.

Frequently asked questions

How long do LFT results take in Bali? Usually same
day at a walk-in pathology lab — often within a couple of hours. Clinics
and hospitals that batch samples may take until the next morning. Ask
about turnaround if you’re flying out soon.

Do I need a referral for a liver function test? No.
You can self-refer for an LFT at essentially any lab or clinic in Bali.
A referral only becomes relevant if you’re claiming on insurance that
requires one, or if a specialist consultation follows.

Should I avoid alcohol before the test? It’s
sensible to avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before an LFT if you
want the truest baseline, because alcohol can transiently raise liver
enzymes and GGT. Tell the doctor honestly about your recent intake — it
changes how a mild elevation is read.

Can medications affect my liver results? Yes. Many
common medications and even some herbal supplements can nudge liver
enzymes. Bring a list of everything you take, including over-the-counter
products, so a mild elevation isn’t misread.

Is a raised ALT dangerous? Not necessarily. A
single, mild elevation with no symptoms is common and often benign. What
matters is whether it’s marked, whether several markers move together,
whether it persists on a repeat, and whether you have symptoms — all of
which a doctor weighs.
