Bone Density Scans in Bali: Where to Get a DEXA (2027)

Short answer: A bone density (DEXA/DXA)
scan
in Bali is available at the larger international-standard
hospitals (BIMC, Siloam Denpasar, Bali International Hospital) that have
imaging departments — not at walk-in labs. Expect to pay roughly
IDR 500,000–1,800,000 (USD 31–113) for a standard
hip-and-spine scan, with results the same day or within 48 hours. It is
a quick, painless, low-radiation X-ray-based scan that measures bone
strength, and it is the standard test for diagnosing osteoporosis and
assessing fracture risk.

This is a comparison guide, not a hospital. We do not run scanners,
sell packages or take bookings — we help you weigh the options and, once
you have decided, our free JHG Medical

What a DEXA scan measures

DEXA stands for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. It uses two
low-dose X-ray beams to measure the mineral density of your bones —
usually at the hip and lower spine, the sites most relevant to serious
fractures. The scan is quick (about 10–20 minutes), painless, and
involves only a very small amount of radiation, far less than a standard
chest X-ray.

The result tells you how strong your bones are relative to a healthy
young-adult reference, which lets a doctor estimate your risk of
fracture and decide whether treatment or lifestyle changes are
warranted. For how imaging tests sit alongside blood work in a complete
review, see our pillar on what tests a Bali

Where to get a DEXA scan in
Bali

International-standard
hospitals

BIMC Siloam, Siloam Hospitals
Denpasar
and the newer Bali International
Hospital
near the Sanur health zone have radiology departments
that offer DEXA scanning with English-speaking radiologists and
physicians to interpret the report. These are the appropriate venues,
and the ones I recommend so the T-score is explained in context rather
than handed over as a number.

What smaller clinics can do

Boutique and expat clinics do not have DEXA scanners on-site, but
they can arrange a referral and, importantly, pair the scan with a
vitamin D test and blood calcium markers that give a
fuller picture of bone health. Bundling these makes sense — see our vitamin D testing guide, since low
vitamin D directly undermines bone strength.

How to read your T-score

DEXA results are reported as a T-score, comparing
your bone density to that of a healthy young adult. A widely used
framework classifies a T-score of −1.0 or above as normal,
between −1.0 and −2.5 as low bone mass (osteopenia), and −2.5 or below
as osteoporosis
— with diagnosis and any treatment decision
made by a physician in light of your full fracture-risk profile, not
from the number alone (International Osteoporosis Foundation,
diagnosis and T-score reference material,
osteoporosis.foundation). A Z-score, comparing you to others your own
age, is used instead for younger adults and children.

Medical disclaimer: This guide is for information
only and is not medical advice. T-score thresholds, the meaning of your
result, and any diagnosis or treatment depend on your age, sex, history
and overall fracture risk — always consult a licensed physician.

Who should
consider a bone density scan in Bali

  • Postmenopausal women and men over about
    70
, the groups at highest osteoporosis risk.
  • Anyone over 50 who has broken a bone from a minor
    fall.
  • People on long-term steroids or with conditions
affecting bone (such as early menopause, thyroid or coeliac
    disease).
  • Long-stay expats folding it into a senior review

    check guide
    and expat annual health check
    guide

Preparing for the scan

No fasting is needed and the scan itself requires no special
preparation, but do not take calcium supplements on the
day of the scan (they can interfere with spine readings), and tell the
radiographer if you have recently had a barium study or a contrast
CT/nuclear scan, as these can affect results. Wear comfortable clothing
without metal fasteners over the areas being scanned. Because it is a
low-radiation X-ray, tell staff if there is any chance you are
pregnant.

Bundling a DEXA
with the tests that explain it

A T-score tells you that your bones are thinning, but not
always why. That is why a bone density scan is most useful when
paired with a few blood tests that reveal treatable contributors: a low
vitamin D level (extremely common even in sunny Bali),
abnormal calcium, and — in some cases — thyroid or hormone markers, all
of which influence bone turnover. If you are having a DEXA, it is worth
asking your doctor whether to add these at the same visit so any
deficiency can be corrected alongside the diagnosis. See our vitamin D testing guide for how that
single, inexpensive test underpins bone health, and our thyroid testing guide if fatigue
or metabolic symptoms accompany your concern.

Beyond the
scan: protecting bone strength in Bali

A scan is only the starting point. Whatever the T-score, the levers
that protect bone are consistent: adequate vitamin D and calcium,
weight-bearing and resistance exercise, not smoking, moderating alcohol,
and — where indicated — medication prescribed by a doctor. Bali’s
active, outdoor lifestyle can actually help here, provided you are
getting the sunlight and movement that support bone density rather than
working indoors all day. For older residents building this into a fuller
review, our senior and
retiree health check guide
sets a DEXA in the context of the other
screens that matter after 60, and our health check over 50 guide covers
the earlier decade when prevention pays off most.
